Let Us Make Your CHI Papers Accessible

Each year, only a small fraction of CHI papers are created in a way that is fully accessible to people with disabilities. It’s not particularly difficult to make papers accessible once you have the right tools and know how, but getting started can be tricky. It’s unintuitive, the tools are expensive, and the impact of your effort can be hidden from you.

This year, the Accessibility Group at CMU is offering to make your papers accessible for you. Just send your paper to chiaccessibility@gmail.com and we’ll quickly send an accessible version back to you.

What To Do

Email your PDF and (optionally) a text file of descriptions for your images to chiaccessibility@gmail.com. If you don’t include a text file of descriptions, we’ll write the descriptions for you.

We’ll reply with an accessible version ASAP (target of under an hour during daytime hours).

Remember that you need to have a version uploaded to PCS by 1/7, and the final version is due on 1/15. We’ll be working hard on these dates to keep up with demand, but early submissions will be appreciated!

Thanks!

Some small print:

We can’t absolutely guarantee that we’ll be able to respond to you before the deadline. Please submit the inaccessible version if you don’t hear from us by the deadline. If all ~500 accepted CHI papers email us in the last 10 minutes, we will certainly fail. We would appreciate early submissions and would also appreciate as many people as possible following the instructions for making your paper accessible on your own. We also can’t take responsibility for the final outcome, but we are some of the best people in the CHI community for making your papers accessible so you should be in good hands. Finally, we will delete your PDFs as soon as we make them accessible to protect your confidentiality.
